The main aim of the environment program is to protect and conserve Lebanon's natural environment. Much of Lebanon's countryside has been deforested and over the years the famed Cedar forests of Lebanon have been logged almost to extinction. Very few forests remain today and those that are still with us need urgent attention. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) executed a land cover survey for Lebanon in 1991 and this showed that Lebanon has only 2.9% of its coniferous and 4.2% of its deciduous forest remaining today. The
focus of this
program is on the preservation of existing forests, the creation of
parks
and nature reserves, and the reforestation of depleted forests. |
